Nikon has announced the interchangeable lens camera Nikon 1 AW1, which the company claims is the world’s first waterproof and shockproof camera of its kind. The company has also launched two new waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof lenses, the 1 Nikkor AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and the 1 Nikkor AW 10mm f/2.8.
The camera, touted to be designed for harsh climates is supposed to be waterproof down to 49 feet and freezeproof down to -10° C. Despite its rugged built, the Nikon 1 AW1 is supposed to be lightweight and packed with features like in-built GPS tracker, altimeter, depth gauge, an electronic compass and a virtual horizon indicator, that aim to make travel into harsh climatic conditions easier.
The Nikon 1 AW 1 will be available as a one-lens kit, with the Nikkor AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, and a two-lens kit with the 1 Nikkor AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and 1 Nikkor AW 10mm f/2.8 lenses. The camera will be available in October for a price of $799 (Rs 50,640 approx.) The Nikon 1 AW1 two lens kit with the 11-27.5mm and 10mm lenses will be available in October 2013 for the price of $999 (Rs 63,316 approx.) The kits will be available in black, silver and white colours and the accessory skins for the camera and the lenses will be available in black, khaki and orange. The skins will be available for $36 (Rs 2,281 approx.) The Filter AW 40.5 NC attachment will be available in Spring 2014 and its price has not been announced yet. There is no word on international availability just yet.

The Nikon 1 AW1 also sports a wide ISO range (160 to 6400), allowing users to capture sharp photos in a variety of lighting conditions, even while handheld. The camera comes with Nikon’s Advanced Hybrid Autofocus (AF) system that lets you capture moving action. It has a 73-point AF array that can let you lock into action within approximately 80-milliseconds. The camera also allows for what Nikon touts to be the world’s fastest continuous shooting frame rate at approximately 15fps with AF and 60fps when the focus is locked.
The Nikon 1 AW 1, like the Coolpix AW110 includes Action Control that allows users to control certain functions of the camera simply by swinging it in the air. The Creative Mode menu provides an easy way to utilize full manual exposure controls (P,S,A,M) as well as Selective Color, Miniature, Soft, Night Landscape, Backlighting and Night Portrait modes.
The Nikon 1 AW1 incorporates Full HD 1080p video capabilities as well as Advanced Movie Mode. In Advanced Movie Mode, users can shoot Full HD video and high-resolution stills simultaneously. Additionally, Slow Motion Movies can capture all the action at either 400 fps or 1200 fps.
